Ask Professor Milligan: Where to find stock ideas
Professor Milligan shares his ideas for where he looks to find stocks.
Key Takeaways
- Search for stocks hitting all-time highs, as this signals heavy institutional buying and indicates the stock is in the right sector at the right time—use your brokerage's all-time high list and analyze the charts of top performers
- Track sector rotation performance across 1-week, 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year timeframes to identify which industries are outperforming, then drill down into those sectors to find the top individual stock performers
- Screen for companies beating Wall Street consensus estimates on both earnings per share and revenue, as this indicates business strength and typically leads to analyst upgrades and higher stock prices
- Adopt a 'buy high, sell higher' philosophy instead of bargain hunting—remember the Wall Street saying 'the rich get richer and the poor get poorer,' meaning momentum stocks tend to continue their trends
- Think forward-looking like institutional portfolio managers by anticipating what sectors and stocks will perform well over the next 6-12 months, rather than reacting to past performance
