Level Up with Lee featuring Chef Amadeus (1-24-22)
Lee Baker interviews Extreme Chef, Chef Amadeus about his career, cooking, eating healthy and saving money.
Key Takeaways
- Shop the perimeter of grocery stores (produce, meat, seafood, eggs, bread) where unprocessed foods are located, rather than processed items in center aisles, to eat healthier and save money
- Visit local farmers markets where producers sell food they grew themselves—this is more reliable for truly organic products than store labels, which Chef Amadeus views as marketing tools to charge higher prices
- Make salad dressings and sauces from scratch using simple ingredients like oil, vinegar, and honey; homemade versions have fewer preservatives than store-bought alternatives and cost less
- Use salt-free seasoning blends (like citrus pepper) to add flavor without sodium restrictions, allowing you to use more seasoning without making dishes overly salty
- Understand that grocery prices likely won't return to pre-pandemic levels because consumers have adjusted to higher prices; focus instead on modifying your lifestyle and cooking habits to manage food costs
