The Challenges of Working at Home

Key Takeaways

• Recognize that remote work opportunities primarily benefit higher-income, degree-holding workers in professional roles; service industry and minority workers often cannot work from home and risk being left behind by this trend
• Consider alternative flexible arrangements beyond remote work, such as split shifts or non-traditional hours (e.g., late night/early morning work) for employees who cannot work from home but need schedule flexibility for childcare
• Explore 2-year community college combined with branded certifications and remote work experience as an alternative to 4-year residential degrees, potentially saving tens of thousands in room and board costs while avoiding student loan debt
• Account for the mental health and social isolation costs of remote work, which directly impact financial well-being and productivity—this is not just a quality-of-life issue but an economic one
• Evaluate whether a college degree is necessary for flex workforce jobs versus alternative credentials, as the cost of student loan debt for room and board can be equally damaging to your financial future as lacking a degree
