Top Gun Technician | Trendlines Over Headlines with James Bartelloni
Top Gun Technician | Trendlines Over Headlines with James Bartelloni: This week, James Bartelloni joined us to talk technicals. James is a former Top Gun pilot turned technician and the founder of BartsCharts.com. We discussed his unorthodox approach to analyzing the markets and took a close look at Banks and the VIX.
Key Takeaways
- Use price and time as your primary tools—remove all indicators from your charts and look for repeated measured moves and fractal patterns that occur across different timeframes (daily, weekly, monthly)
- Apply the 'P-E-R-S-D' framework: Project where price will go using prior moves, Extend off pivot points using Fibonacci ratios, Retrace at key levels, look for Structure (polarity), and occasionally add Divergence via RSI on major moves
- Calculate expected S&P 500 moves by dividing current VIX by 16 (the square root of annual trading days); at VIX 20, expect roughly 1.25% move; at VIX 30, expect roughly 1.875% move
- Stack multiple converging projections (Elliott Wave, Fibonacci extensions, time cycles, measured moves) at the same price level to increase probability—when price and time align harmonically, significant reversals often occur
- Focus exclusively on controlling your stop placement and position sizing, not on predicting outcomes—the pattern either works or it doesn't; when stopped out, accept it as part of the process rather than a personal failure
