3 Steps to a Successful Career Transition

Key Takeaways

• Ask yourself "What would I do if I won the lottery?" to identify your true passion independent of financial pressure, then pursue roles aligned with that genuine interest rather than just salary
• Plan two career steps ahead instead of just one—work backwards from your 2-step goal to determine what immediate action to take, creating a strategic path rather than reactive short-term moves
• Create a list of 5-6 core career values (like flexibility for family time, helping others, or growth) and evaluate job offers against these values; use free tools like the "values card deck" from Think to Perform to identify your specific values
• Prioritize emotional satisfaction and fulfillment over salary when making career transition decisions—high income without alignment to your values leads to unhappiness
• Apply these steps consistently throughout your career as multiple job transitions become the norm; long-term thinking prevents the trap of chasing instant gratification with each new opportunity
