Reimagine Retirement
The panel discusses reinventing retirement in the new normal and the challenges lower income people face.
Key Takeaways
- Shift your retirement mindset from binary 'work or retirement' to 'work and retirement'—consider part-time roles, volunteer positions, or passion projects that keep you engaged without requiring 60-70 hour weeks
- Plan for three retirement phases (go-go, slow-go, no-go years) and prioritize aging in place with home-based healthcare rather than nursing homes, which is more affordable and allows you to stay surrounded by family
- Combat age discrimination by advocating for workplace policies that allow healthy workers to continue employment longer, and consider roles like bookkeeper, administrative assistant, paralegal, or customer service representative that can be done part-time or from home
- Reframe fulfillment from material accumulation (bigger house, car, boat) to contribution and service—volunteer work in areas you care about (nonprofits, financial literacy, community causes) actually provides greater personal satisfaction than additional income
- Explore paid opportunities like becoming a full-time grandparent or caregiver while pursuing other work, which allows you to stay active and generate income while supporting family members who need childcare
